Practical Assessment - Instructions for Assessor
Conditions of Assessment: Assessors must satisfy SNR/ASQA assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Where assessment of competency includes third party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the required outcomes of the unit. Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
Demonstration Requirements: Trainee is to demonstrate on at least one occasion –
• applying relevant workplace rules and procedures
• communicating effectively with individuals and/or groups
• following workplace policies, procedures and protocols
• identifying the danger zone and safe places
• identifying job hazards and taking required action to • minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards using personal protective equipment (PPE) that conforms to Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements.
Assessor is to schedule an appropriate time and duration for the Trainee to demonstrate the assessment task/s and associated questions.
Oral Questions: Questions must be asked while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/s have been completed.
Flexibility: Assessor to modify activities to cater for variations in workplace context and environment.

Practical Assessment - Instructions for Candidate
To meet the requirements of this unit of competency, you will be required to successfully complete the Practical Assessment. The assessor may be also asked to provide additional evidence to attach to the Practical component. This checklist should be completed in the following ways: -
(Satisfactory)- Indicates demonstration to an acceptable industry standard with application of required knowledge, problem solving, following safe work practices and meeting the workplace responsibilities and expectations as required.
(Not Yet Satisfactory)- In this case, reasons should be given to justify a decision of being unsuccessful.
Re-assessments should be carried out only on that particular area where the participant were deemed unsuccessful and further evidence is required. The trainer or assessor needs to observe you demonstrating the following essential skills in your workplace or in a simulated environment. In order to achieve competency in this unit, every box should have a tick.
Conditions of Practical Assessment: The assessor / trainer will provide the instructions, if you are unclear about what you have to do, clarify instructions with your assessor /trainer before commencing practical tasks. You must be observed independently, and all activities demonstrated satisfactory. Practical tasks must be undertaken with correct footwear, high vis clothing and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that may be required as appropriate.
The Practical Assessment may be stopped immediately at any time if you act in a way that puts yourself, other learners, the assessor / trainer, property or equipment in any danger. If this happens, rescheduling of the assessment will be at the discretion of your assessor / trainer.

Section A - Take Appropriate Safety Precautions to Access the Rail Corridor

A1 - Authority to enter the rail corridor is obtained from Protection Officer/Possession Protection Officer.
Benchmark: Learner correctly communicates with the Protection Officer and receives explicit permission to enter.

A2 - Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn conforming to Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements.
Benchmark: Learner wears all necessary PPE (high-visibility vest, hard hat, gloves, safety boots) correctly and ensures PPE is in good condition.

A3 - Hazards are identified, risks are assessed, and control measures are implemented.
Benchmark: Learner identifies at least three potential hazards, identifies risks, and indentifies appropriate control measures.

A4 - Once rail corridor is entered, a visual assessment is maintained to monitor and respond appropriately to potential risks.
Benchmark: Learner continuously scans the environment, identifies any emerging risks, and takes prompt action to mitigate them.

Section B - Take Appropriate Safety Precautions to Access the Danger Zone

B1 - Direction of approaching trains and minimum sighting distance is recognised in accordance with directions from Protection Officer/Possession Protection Officer.
Benchmark: Learner correctly identifies the direction of approaching trains and maintains the minimum sighting distance as per guidelines.

B2 - Safe place is identified.
Benchmark: Learner accurately identifies a designated safe place within the rail corridor.

B3 - Types of warning provided are recognised and confirmed.
Benchmark: Learner recognizes at least two types of warnings (audible, visual) and confirms their understanding.

B4 - Changed local conditions are identified, impact on safety is determined, and safety precautions are modified as required.
Benchmark: Learner identifies changes in local conditions, assesses their impact on safety, and adjusts safety measures accordingly.

B5 - Communications with other personnel are maintained in accordance with workplace procedures.
Benchmark: Learner maintains clear and effective communication with all relevant personnel using appropriate channels and protocols.

B6 - Unsafe situations and/or emergencies are identified, and appropriate action is taken in accordance with workplace procedures.
Benchmark: Learner identifies at least one unsafe situation or emergency and takes appropriate action following workplace procedures.

Section C - Take Appropriate Action in an Emergency

C1 - Emergencies and potential emergencies are identified.
Benchmark: Learner identifies at least two potential emergencies relevant to the rail corridor.

C2 - Range of appropriate responses for specific emergencies are outlined.
Benchmark: Learner outlines a range of responses for at least two specific emergencies, demonstrating knowledge of appropriate actions.

C3 - ‘Emergency’ or ‘danger’ response signal is given as required.
Benchmark: Learner correctly gives the ‘emergency’ or ‘danger’ response signal promptly and clearly.
