Course Overview

This qualification is designed for individuals who are ready to take on challenging roles and perform complex, non-routine activities in open cut mines or quarries. As a supervisor or team leader, you will be responsible for ensuring the quantity and quality of output of others, contributing to technical solutions for non-routine problems, and applying safety management plans to the workplace.

Our course includes the highly regarded S123 Supervisor Course, as well as mandatory units of competency for QLD SSE Notice and NSW Emergency Management Modules. In addition, we offer a range of other industry-relevant units of competency to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in your role.

Course Delivery and Duration

This course takes approximately 12 months to achieve the Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations. The course is designed as hands on practical learning, and is conducted at any of our training centres located in Queensland or at your work site. Based on demand, other training venues and locations may become available throughout the year.

The program covers topics such as mine safety, environmental management, mining planning, and mineral processing and provides career opportunities for graduates of Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations including:

Mineral Processing Supervisor: A Mineral Processing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the process of extracting minerals from raw ore. They work in processing plants, ensuring that the plant runs efficiently, and that the quality of the final product meets industry standards.

Open Cut Mine Supervisor: An Open Cut Mine Supervisor is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of an open-cut mine. This involves supervising workers, monitoring production levels, and ensuring that safety procedures are followed.

Quarry Supervisor: A Quarry Supervisor oversees the operations of a quarry, which involves extracting materials such as limestone, sand, and gravel. They manage workers, monitor production levels, and ensure that safety procedures are followed.

Safety Advisor: A Safety Advisor is responsible for ensuring that safety procedures are in place and adhered to on a mine site. They conduct safety audits, develop safety procedures, and provide training to workers on safe work practices.

In total, you need to complete all core and 19 elective units from the list below. These units will be confirmed at time of enrolment. This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and upon completion you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
