GTA-R - Gas Test Atmospheres - Refresher



The refresher course is designed to meet industry standards requiring that the skills and knowledge required to: test the working atmosphere, use electronic test apparatus, and determine it is safe to perform the proposed work is current and valid. This course is 100% online, allowing you to work through the course content and refresh your knowledge self-paced, at any time! 

Course Overview

This unit of competency refreshes the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

The working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

The unit is suitable for use in the following situations:

  • confined spaces
  • enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
  • testing as part of issuing a work permit
  • monitoring as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

Course Validity and Refreshers

The refresher period for the mining unit(s) is five years, a shorter period may be required where industry/company requirements are applicable. Individuals can refresh their competencies anytime within the five-year period in line with these industry/company-specific requirements. 

Entry Requirements

To qualify for this Refresher Course, students are required to provide a notarised copy of their existing equivalent ‘Gas Test Atmospheres’ qualification/ statement of attainment. 

If the student does not meet the refresher course requirements, and therefore is required to complete the ‘full course’,  an additional assessment fee of $80 will apply for the practical training and assessment component (delivered at a Civil Safety Training Centre).

The course includes the following topics:
 
  • Plan and prepare for working in a Confined Space
  • Work in Confined Space
  • Exit confined space
  • Clean up

Course Delivery

Support

You will be required to complete a pre-enrolment assessment as part of the enrolment process.  The pre-enrolment assessment assists in evaluating your suitability for the course and to tailor any required support services to meet your individual needs.  If required, a representative from Civil Safety may contact you to discuss alternative options or available support services to assist you with your course.
 
During your studies, you will receive feedback after each assessment/assignment and the trainer/assessor will be available to discuss the feedback or provide additional assistance or direction as appropriate. 

Certification

A qualification and transcript will be issued by Civil safety upon successful completion of course requirements, provided that all administrative requirements have been met and course fees are paid in full.  In these circumstances, the certificate will be issued within 30 days. For all refresher courses, a Statement of Attainments will be issued within 2 business days.

Enrolment

Enrolment is contingent upon an application being accepted.  Factors considered in the evaluation of enrolment applications include meeting course entry requirements, eligibility for a training subsidy (where applicable) and acceptance of any applicable terms of enrolment.

It is a condition of enrolment in any nationally recognised training (accredited) programme that you supply the training organisation with a valid unique student identifier (USI).  If you don’t already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au.

Enrolment is confirmed upon payment of applicable fees, Civil Safety will collect no more than $1500 of the total fee on initial enrolment.
