Course Overview

Become a Statutory Supervisor in Western Australia's Mining Industry.

Are you ready to step into a crucial role within Western Australia's mining sector?   The Statutory Supervisor skill set provides the WHS and risk management knowledge necessary for statutory supervisors operating on mining sites. Under WHS law, mine operators must ensure sufficient appropriate persons are appointed to the statutory positions under Schedule 26 of the WHS (Mines) Regulations (WA) 2022. This course ensures you meet these unit of competency requirements to fulfill one of these positions.

The Statutory Supervisor course includes two essential Units of Competency:

  • BSBWHS411 - Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures, and programs
  • BSBWHS414 - Contribute to WHS risk management

These units are designed to provide supervisors and team leaders with the skills needed to oversee WHS policies, identify hazards, assess risks, and implement risk controls in the mining industry.

As well as completing the two Units of Competency within this course, there is also an examination component that Statutory Supervisors are required to pass. This is managed by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) – more information on this is outlined on the DEMIRS website.

Schedule 26 replaces Section 44. The former Section 44 outlined the requirements under the now-superseded Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994. This has been updated and replaced with the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022. Under the transitional arrangements for the WHS Mines Regulations, a competent person can be appointed to the statutory supervisor position until 20 March 2026. After this date, individuals appointed as statutory supervisors must meet the eligibility criteria, including completing the approved risk management units of competency and passing the legislation examination.
