FIFO Secrets - What’s FIFO Really Like?

FIFO work has become increasingly popular in Australia over the last couple of decades due to a unique combination of job security, high pay, career development and work-life balance. The FIFO lifestyle can be extremely lucrative and rewarding, but it isn’t for everyone. Knowing the ins and outs (and pros and cons) of FIFO work is key to deciding if it’s the right career path and lifestyle for you.

What is FIFO?

Fly-In Fly-Out, or FIFO work, allows people to work in remote locations without having to relocate to the area. Employees are flown in and out of their worksite and provided with accommodation, hospitality, and recreation during their time away. Depending on their location, many workers also have access to modern amenities like restaurants, gyms, and entertainment. FIFO is often used in the mining sector but can also be utilised in other industries such as construction, energy industries, and oil and gas industry.

How Does Rostering Work?

FIFO jobs typically involve working on a roster (also called swings), which means you’ll be working long hours for a few days or weeks at a time, followed by a period of rest and relaxation (R&R). During your break, FIFO workers can return home or take holidays – making it a popular lifestyle for people who love travelling, want to live in remote locations or looking for flexible working options.

Pros and Cons of FIFO Work

Benefits

  • Attractive pay and benefits: In industries like mining, FIFO roles typically offer higher salaries and additional benefits to compensate for the demands of working in remote areas. Many work sites also provide workers with meals, accommodation, and travel allowances. This can be a significant advantage for individuals looking to maximise their earnings.
  • Job security: The mining sector in QLD has been a significant contributor to the state’s economy for many years. Mining operations are typically long-term projects, providing employees with more stability and job security compared to other industries.
  • Freedom to live where you choose: FIFO workers have the freedom and flexibility to work in a variety of locations without needing to relocate. Due to skill shortages, companies are willing to fly skilled workers in from almost any location.
  • Flexible work-life balance: FIFO jobs also allow workers to achieve a greater work-life balance. With structured rosters and extended breaks, FIFO workers can spend more time with their families and friends when they are not working. This can lead to a happier and more fulfilled life outside of work.
  • Career advancement: FIFO jobs offer unique career opportunities in industries that are experiencing rapid growth, such as mining. These jobs often provide valuable experience and skill development, which can lead to further career progression.
  • Exposure to new environments: FIFO jobs often take place in remote and scenic locations, allowing workers to explore different parts of Australia. This can be appealing to individuals who enjoy working outdoors and exploring diverse cultures and natural landscapes.
  • Camaraderie and community: FIFO workers often build lifelong friendships. This is largely due to the shared living arrangements in camps and the extensive hours spent working in remote locations, away from family and friends. The close-knit nature of FIFO work is invaluable, as it creates a supportive network of people who understand the unique challenges of working remotely.

Challenges

  • Long hours and rosters: FIFO schedules often involve extended work hours which can be physically and mentally demanding. Rosters can be irregular and may include working weekends or public holidays, which might not suit everyone’s lifestyles.
  • Harsh working conditions: Remote work sites are usually very well equipped, however depending on the location, FIFO workers may face challenging environments, including extreme temperatures, dust, noise and humidity.
  • Separation from home: FIFO jobs require you to spend time away from family and friends, which can be difficult for some people to manage. This may take time to adjust to and may cause you to experience feelings of isolation. This can be especially challenging if you have young children or ageing parents who require care.

Who Pays For The Flights?

Typically, the employer covers the cost of flights for FIFO workers. This includes both the transportation to the remote site for work and the return journey home during rest periods. Employers may also provide additional travel allowances or perks to cover the commuting process for their employees.
