Brett’s journey to becoming a Top 3 finalist in the 2025 Queensland Training Awards Vocational Student of the Year – Tropical North Queensland category, is nothing short of inspirational. His story proves that even the most challenging pasts can lead to a bright and meaningful future. For over a decade, Brett’s life was marked by drug and alcohol addiction, repeated incarcerations, and profound personal loss. He was a young man spiraling out of control, caught in a destructive cycle that offered little hope of escape. During his final stint in prison, he came to the realisation that something had to change, and he couldn’t continue on the path he was on.
“At 27, I had a bag of clothes to my name. I had lost my child and I wasn’t allowed out to go to the funeral. I contemplated suicide, my life was bleak”.
Upon his release, Brett made bold moves. He relocated to Cairns with his mother to escape old environments and influences. From there, he connected with Back2Work, which led him to Civil Safety. At that point, his primary goal was to find employment in the mining industry. He enrolled in Civil Safety’s Certificate III in Rural Operations, a decision that would change the course of his life forever.
“At first, it was just about getting a job. But the training became so much more. It gave me structure, purpose, and belief in myself for the first time in years.”
Brett excelled in the course showing an unmatched work ethic and passion for learning. He arrived early, stayed late, and even came in on his days off to help other students and gain extra machine hours. His dedication and transformation has been recognised by his trainer, his employer, and his peers.

Following his completion of his course, Brett secured a role with Austral Resources working FIFO at a copper mine near Mount Isa. He has embraced the demands of the mining sector, taking on 12-hour shifts with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. On site, Brett quickly earned respect from supervisors and co-workers alike.
“My colleagues can’t believe I was that person, I can’t believe I was that person. Every day now feels like a gift.”

A mentor to others
Currently, Brett is undertaking a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122), with the long-term goal of becoming a trainer, giving back to the community, and hopefully one day being able to teach inmates in prison. “I want to give back, help others because I know what it’s like to have no faith in yourself.” Brett said.
“When you think about programs to help young offenders 10 years ago there wasn’t a lot in place. The training was so different to the school learning I remembered and the study I did inside. It was practical: the trainers were genuine in wanting you to succeed and get a job. I wish I had access to teachers like these trainers when I was younger. It would have saved a lot of heartache. I want to share my story and help make a difference: share that school may not be for everyone, but training for the real world is different – stimulating and engaging.”
Beyond work, Brett continues to engage in addiction recovery counselling and peer mentoring. He’s become a quiet leader in his circles – offering support, encouragement, and living proof that change is possible. His message to others is clear: training is more than education; it’s a second chance.

Onwards and upwards
We are very proud of what Brett has achieved in his personal and professional life, and we look forward to seeing him progress throughout the remainder of the Queensland Training Awards 2025 program.
We’re sure he has what it takes to take out this years’ top gong!
