After 15 years of operation in Moranbah, Civil Safety is proud to announce the re-opening of its brand-new, state-of-the-art training centre —a major step forward in its ongoing commitment to the region and its people.

But that’s not all. In a significant move toward supporting Indigenous employment and skills development, Civil Safety has also signed an exclusive new partnership with the Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation (BBAC). The partnership aims to improve training outcomes and job readiness for Barada Barna people, with a focus on creating pathways into the local mining sector.

A modern approach to training and culture

Through this partnership, BBAC will use Civil Safety’s ‘Online Anytime’ learning platform, which combines online, classroom, and on-the-job training. The program is designed to equip participants with the practical skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Central Queensland’s booming mining industry— all while remaining grounded in cultural identity and heritage.

BBAC Chairperson Luarna Dynevor highlighted how crucial training and employment pathways are for long-term community development.

“It creates a cycle of employment and stability in tune with today’s modern workforce,” she said. “This training ensures there are always opportunities for the next generation to start a career—especially in mining.”

From humble beginnings to regional impact

Civil Safety was founded 15 years ago by Robert Kerridge in a rented building on Bacon Street. Starting out with one trainer and a trailer, the organisation has grown to employ over 100 staff and now operates one of the largest networks of training facilities in Australia.

“Our new digs are more than just a building,” said Mr Kerridge. “It’s a symbol of our ongoing commitment to Central Queensland and a gateway to best-in-class training.”

With long-standing industry relationships—including with BMA, Thiess, and Anglo American—Civil Safety has become a trusted partner in workforce development across the region.

Supporting local schools and future careers

The new Moranbah facility is also playing a key role in educating the next generation. Civil Safety has been collaborating with Moranbah State High School for over three years, providing students with vocational training that aligns with career opportunities in mining.

Deputy Principal Ashley Spain noted that the training blocks fit seamlessly into the school’s curriculum.

“Many of our students follow in the footsteps of their parents who work in mining. This training gives them the foundation they need to step confidently into those roles.”

Student Cody Metcalfe, 16, is already seeing the benefits.

My dad works in the mines, and by doing these courses I’ve learned what mining’s all about. It’s made me want to follow that path too.”

Driving regional growth

Isaac Regional Councillor Melissa Westcott praised the new centre for boosting local opportunity and retention.

“Facilities like this help keep our people in town—and bring new people to town,” she said. “It gives students a chance to try out a career path without fully committing, and that’s invaluable when making decisions about the future.”

The new Civil Safety centre is more than a training hub—it’s a catalyst for economic development, workforce sustainability, and community growth in Moranbah and beyond.
