In the high-stakes world of mining, having the right leadership is crucial for safety and compliance. The Schedule 26 Statutory Supervisor course is essential for those looking to step up and take on supervisory roles while ensuring compliance with the latest regulations. This guide provides the information you need to understand the course and its importance.
What Are Statutory Positions?
Statutory positions are roles mandated by Work Health and Safety (WHS) law. These statutory positions are assigned by the mine operator to perform specific duties related to the mine’s operations. Statutory positions are divided into various categories, each with distinct functions, responsibilities, and required levels of knowledge, experience, and formal qualifications.
There are five key statutory positions:
- Site Senior Executive
- Exploration Manager
- Underground Manager (non-coal) if the mine is an underground non-coal mine
- Underground Manager (coal) if the mine is an underground coal mine
- Quarry Manager if required under the WHS Mines Regulations (Schedule 26, clause 14).
Each of these roles plays a critical part in ensuring compliance and safety in mining operations.
Are There Entry Requirements?
To enrol in the Statutory Mining Supervisors course, you must meet the entry requirements, which include, a minimum of two years experience as a worker or supervisor in the mining industry or similar experience in a relevant industry.

Does Schedule 26 Replace Section 44?
Yes, Schedule 26 replaces Section 44, reflecting a more robust approach to safety training and compliance. This update emphasises the necessity of having qualified personnel in supervisory roles, enhancing safety standards across the industry.
What Is the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Relations and Safety (DEMIRS) Legislation Examination?
The DEMIRS legislation examination is a key component of the certification process for statutory supervisors. This examination tests your understanding of relevant mining laws, safety regulations, and best practices. Passing this exam is crucial for those looking to secure a statutory position and demonstrate their commitment to workplace safety.
