Civil Safety Townsville facilitator Jeanie recently travelled to Charters Towers to deliver the Work Placement Program, supported by the wider team.

Prior to commencement, an information session was held with students, employers, and Job Services Providers. The session outlined the program structure, participant expectations, and the employment pathways available upon completion

The program was strongly encouraged for First Nations participants, while remaining open to all eligible students, including non-First Nations applicants, ensuring inclusive access to training and employment opportunities within the region.

The Work Placement Program ran over a two-week period and was designed to provide participants with both job readiness training and real-world industry exposure.

The program was structured into two key phases:

  • Week 1: Work Preparation - Including the nationally recognised Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card) construction induction course (CPCWHS1001)

  • Week 2: Work Placement

During the preparation week, students developed essential employment and workplace skills, including resume writing, communication, self-esteem development, and time management. Participants also engaged in employer visits, providing valuable exposure to a range of industries and workplace expectations.

The second week focused on hands-on work experience, allowing students to apply their skills in real work environments with local employers. This practical exposure also created clear opportunities for participants to transition into ongoing employment.

The program commenced with 8 applicants, including 2 non-First Nations participants. Of these, 6 students attended and successfully completed the work experience component.

The outcomes of the program were highly positive:

  • 5 participants gained employment

  • 1 participant transitioned into full-time study

  • 1 participant pursued a career opportunity in Townsville

These results reflect the strength of the program in building confidence, capability, and real employment pathways for participants in the Charters Towers region.
