Frequently Asked Questions
To deliver nationally recognised training within a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you generally need the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). This qualification is the industry standard and equips you with the skills to design assessment tools, facilitate group learning, and lead competency-based training sessions.
Yes. If you are looking for an entry point or only need to train staff internally, you can start with specific Skill Sets. The Work Skill Instructor Skill Set is ideal for face-to-face workplace instruction, while the Assessor Skill Set focuses purely on conducting fair and compliant competency assessments. These are excellent pathways for those supporting qualified trainers in non-accredited settings.
A Site Trainer and Assessor course is typically a non-accredited program designed for individuals who support training delivery on-site, such as in mining or construction. While it provides foundational skills for mentoring and workplace coaching, it does not allow you to issue nationally recognised certificates. To issue formal qualifications, you must hold the accredited Certificate IV through an RTO partner.
To be a successful vocational trainer, you must demonstrate "vocational competence." This means you must have relevant, recent experience in the industry you wish to teach (e.g., Mining, Civil Construction, or Safety). Most RTOs require trainers to hold the same qualification they are teaching, or higher, plus several years of hands-on experience.
Completing a Training and Assessment pathway opens diverse career doors, including:
Vocational Education Teacher at a TAFE or private RTO.
Enterprise Trainer within large corporations to manage internal staff upskilling.
Compliance Officer or Training Manager within high-risk industries like mining.
Independent Consultant providing Verification of Competency (VOC) services to industry.
