The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC21024) builds the core skills needed to begin working or volunteering in the conservation and land management sector.

Through a mix of theory and practical learning, you’ll develop the ability to assist in land rehabilitation, control weeds and pests, care for native plants, and maintain natural environments.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Work safely and sustainably in outdoor environments

  • Identify and care for plants and natural areas

  • Carry out basic revegetation and restoration activities

  • Follow environmental work procedures

  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment

  • Support conservation projects as part of a team

This course is highly practical, giving you real experience working in natural settings such as parks, reserves, and community landcare sites.

Course Delivery and Assessment

The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management is delivered face-to-face, providing a practical and engaging learning experience that allows you to develop essential conservation and land management skills under the guidance of experienced trainers. Throughout the course, you'll participate in hands-on training activities, practical demonstrations, and workplace-based learning designed to build your confidence and competence in real-world environments. You have 12 months to complete the course.

Assessment is competency-based, meaning you'll be evaluated on your ability to perform tasks and apply knowledge in realistic workplace scenarios. This includes:

  • Practical demonstrations of skills and workplace procedures

  • Observation of tasks in simulated or real environments

  • Written assessments to confirm your understanding of key concepts

What You’ll Study

The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management is a nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). On successful completion, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment for the following 15 accredited units of competency.

This course is approved under Career Start, the Queensland Government’s training initiative replacing the Certificate III Guarantee (effective 1 July 2025). Career Start provides eligible Queenslanders with government-subsidised training to help them begin a Certificate III qualification, and potentially an apprenticeship or traineeship, selected from priority or emerging industries. VETiS Funding - this course is eligible for VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools) funding, which provides eligible secondary school students with the opportunity to undertake nationally-recognised training at little or no cost.
