The Conduct Rigid Haul Truck Operations (RIIMPO338E) course gives you the practical knowledge and skills to operate rigid haul trucks safely and effectively across a range of mining, quarrying and civil construction tasks.
You’ll learn about:
Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, workplace procedures, and your responsibilities as a rigid haul truck operator.
Hazard Identification: Identify worksite hazards, ground conditions, traffic interactions, environmental factors, and other risks that can affect safe haul truck operations.
Machine Components & Controls: Understand the main components, controls, systems and capabilities of rigid haul trucks and how to use them safely.
Pre-Operational Checks & Maintenance: Carry out pre-start inspections, identify faults and defects, and complete basic maintenance and shutdown procedures.
Safe Operating Procedures: Operate a rigid haul truck safely and efficiently, including starting, stopping, manoeuvring, travelling and positioning the vehicle.
Loading & Hauling: Safely receive, transport and discharge materials while following site procedures, haul routes, speed limits and load requirements.
Vehicle Stability & Load Management: Understand load limits, centre of gravity, ground conditions and other factors that can affect vehicle stability during operation.
Control Measures & Safety Planning: Follow site-specific risk controls, traffic management requirements, exclusion zones, haul road procedures and safe operating practices.
Dumping & Material Placement: Position and operate the truck safely when tipping or discharging loads, including assessing ground conditions and maintaining safe clearances.
Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to equipment faults, loss of control, incidents, unsafe conditions and other workplace emergencies.
Communication & Reporting: Communicate effectively with other workers and report hazards, defects, incidents and maintenance requirements.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to operate a rigid haul truck safely and effectively, transport and discharge materials, manage common site hazards, and follow workplace procedures across mining, quarrying and civil construction environments.
Course Delivery and Assessment
In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.
Step 1 - Complete Online Module (within 30 days)
The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short exercises) to ensure understanding.
Step 2 - Attend 1 Day of Face-to-Face Training
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.
You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.

To be at least 16 years of age
Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.
*Please note, this unit does not provide sufficient skills to independently load and unload equipment. To perform this activity safely, you must either complete or be assisted by someone who has completed Load and Unload Plant (RIIHAN308F) or an equivalent qualification.
