Forklift Licence Australia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Certified

Operating a forklift is classified as high-risk work for good reason. Machinery operators and drivers recorded a fatality rate of 6.7 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2024, more than five times the national average. A formal licence exists because untrained operators can hurt themselves and other people.

The good news is that getting a forklift licence in Australia doesn’t take long. Once certified, you’ll be able to work in some of Australia’s largest industries. Construction alone accounts for 1.22 million filled jobs in Australia, with transport and warehousing adding a further 694,000. This guide covers everything you need to get licensed, pass your assessment, and start working.

How to get your forklift licence in Australia: step by step

Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck

Most candidates can obtain their forklift licence within 2-3 days on average depending on which state you’re based in. This is how to get a forklift licence in Australia for the first time:

  1. Meet the entry requirements: You need to be at least 18, have basic English literacy, and bring valid photo ID on the day. No prior experience needed.

  2. Choose your licence class: The LF class covers all forklift trucks, including counterbalance, reach, and high-reach forklifts. The LO class is for order pickers and suits candidates heading into high-reach warehouse roles specifically.

  3. Enrol with a registered RTO: Civil Safety (RTO 32381) runs the Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck (TLILIC0003) at our Queensland and Western Australia training centres. If you’d prefer a logbook pathway to build your hours before assessment, we offer a logbook forklift course at selected locations.

  4. Complete the training: This includes two to three days of theory and hands-on practical operation. You’ll get plenty of time on the equipment before anyone starts assessing you.

  5. Pass the assessment: You’ll be tested on theory knowledge and practical operating skills, assessed by your trainer. Our trainers work with you throughout the course so you don’t walk into the assessment with any doubts that you’ll pass.

  6. Apply for your high-risk work licence: Once you’ve passed, you can apply to the relevant state authority. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) handles Queensland applications and WorkSafe Western Australia looks after WA. If you’re already licensed and just need to prove your current competency to a new employer, a verification of competency (VOC) assessment covers that without repeating the full course.

Pro Tip - if you already have experience operating a forklift but need to get a formal qualification for employment, we offer a 1 day specialised forklift course for experienced operators.

How to pass your forklift test

Forklift Licence and Training Courses

The theory component covers load centres, stability triangles, and workplace health and safety protocols. These topics are critical to understanding the machine’s operating capabilities, lifting limitations, and safe operating procedures. Paying close attention during the theory sessions will give you the knowledge and confidence needed to successfully complete the written assessment.

Much like a driving test for your provisional licence, the practical assessment is often the part candidates feel most nervous about - but it’s far more manageable than many expect. Assessors are looking for safe, controlled operation, including correct pre-start checks, smooth steering, maintaining a low load position while travelling, and following workplace safety procedures.

In forklift operation, slow, steady, and deliberate movements are always preferred over rushing, as the assessment is designed to ensure you can operate the equipment safely and responsibly in a real workplace environment.

In 2023-24, 157 workers in Queensland mines and quarries sustained injuries serious enough to require hospitalisation, which is exactly why assessors need to see that you can operate a forklift safely before signing off.

Where a forklift licence can take you

Forklift FIFO

A forklift licence can get you working in growing industries such as warehousing, logistics, construction, and mining. Infrastructure Australia projects a peak workforce demand of 521,000 workers on public infrastructure by mid-2027, with a national shortfall of more than 300,000 workers. In QLD and WA alone, 96 major resources and energy projects are expected to create more than 13,000 new operational roles by 2030. Licensed operators are needed across all of these projects.

Many forklift operators move into mining and civil construction once they have their hours up, where FIFO rosters and remote site work push salaries well above what warehouse and logistics roles typically pay.

Here’s what you can expect to earn across different levels (Marco, can you add in a source here please)

Role level

Example roles

Salary range

Entry level

Warehouse hand, storeperson, yard operator

$50,000 to $65,000

Mid-level

$65,000 to $80,000

Experienced

High-reach specialist, mine site operator, FIFO logistics

$80,000 to $95,000

How to renew your forklift licence

High-risk forklift licences in Queensland and Western Australia are valid for five years. When yours is coming up for renewal, here’s what to do:

  1. Check your expiry date: Your licence card shows the expiry date. Don’t let it lapse. Operating with an expired licence is a compliance breach and some employers won’t put you to work until it’s sorted.

  2. Apply through the relevant state authority: Apply through the relevant state authority - for example, WorkSafe QLD manages high-risk work licence renewals in Queensland, while WorkSafe WA oversees renewals in Western Australia. In most cases, renewing your licence is an administrative process completed through the relevant regulator and does not require repeating the full training course.

  3. Demonstrate current competency if required: Some employers and sites ask for a VOC assessment before putting you back to work, especially if you’ve changed employers or been off the tools for a while. We run VOC assessments for both TLILIC0003 and RIIHAN201E at our Queensland and Western Australia training centres.

FAQs

How long does it take to get a forklift licence in Australia?

Most candidates complete the course in two to three days. The course covers both theory and practical operation, and your Statement of Attainment is issued on the same day you finish. Experienced operators needing a formal qualification for employment can complete the experienced operators course in just one day.

Is a forklift licence valid in both Queensland and Western Australia?

Yes. A forklift high-risk work licence is nationally recognised, so it’s valid in both Queensland and Western Australia without any extra steps. It is also recognised Australia-wide.

What is the difference between TLILIC0003 and RIIHAN201E?

TLILIC0003 is the standard high-risk work licence required to legally operate a forklift in Australia. RIIHAN201E is a competency-based unit used in mining and civil construction environments that focuses on safe operation in those specific settings. Many workers in resources and infrastructure hold both.
