Health and Safety Representative - F2F Refresher Course (QLD) - Course Information

This refresher is built for experienced HSRs who want more than a compliance tick - it’s about staying effective in the role.

Across the day, you’ll revisit your key powers and responsibilities under current WHS legislation, with a strong focus on how they apply in real-world scenarios. Through guided discussion and practical examples, you’ll explore:

  • Updates to WHS laws and what they mean for you

  • How to confidently exercise your powers (PINs, cease work, issue resolution)

  • Communicating and consulting effectively with workers and management

  • Identifying and responding to emerging workplace risks

  • Navigating challenging situations and pushing for safer outcomes

By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of your authority - and how to use it to make a genuine impact.

Course Delivery and Assessment

This is a face-to-face, one-day course designed to be practical, engaging, and directly relevant to your role as an HSR.

Rather than rehashing theory, the session focuses on discussion, shared experiences, and applying your knowledge to realistic workplace scenarios. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, test your understanding, and learn from others in similar roles.

There are no formal exams. Assessment is completed through participation in activities and discussions throughout the day, ensuring you can confidently apply what you’ve learned back in your workplace.

Who Should Complete This Course?

This face-to-face refresher course is designed for HSRs who have already completed their initial training and need to maintain their knowledge and skills to continue representing workers effectively.

Career Pathways

The HSR role is widely recognised as the best "entry-level" experience for a career in Work Health and Safety.. Completing the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course can open the door to a variety of workplace health and safety roles, including:

  • Health and Safety Officer: You can leverage your HSR experience to transition into a full-time safety role. Many HSRs follow this by completing a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419).

  • Safety Coordinator: Managing safety procedures, reporting incidents, and promoting a safety-first culture. Large sites (especially in construction or mining) often look for coordinators who have "ground-floor" experience communicating with both workers and management.

  • Workplace Safety Advisor: Advising management and staff on compliance with safety legislation and best practices.

  • Health and Safety Consultant: Providing expert guidance to improve safety standards across multiple sites or organisations.
