The Operate a Forklift (RIIHAN201E) course gives you the skills to safely operate a forklift truck in a range of workplace environments. You’ll learn how to inspect equipment, move loads safely, and operate a forklift while following workplace procedures and safety regulations.

The training combines practical, hands-on experience with best-practice techniques to build confidence and competence. This course is ideal for those working in warehousing, logistics, mining, construction, and other industries where forklift operation is required.

Operate a Forklift - Course Information

The Operate a Forklift (RIIHAN201E) course provides you with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience to safely operate a forklift truck in the workplace. You’ll learn about:

  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, workplace procedures, and legal obligations for operating a forklift truck.

  • Hazard Identification: Identify workplace hazards, load-related risks, and environmental factors that can impact safe operation.

  • Forklift Equipment: Learn about different types of forklift trucks, their components, and safe operating capabilities.

  • Pre-Use Checks & Maintenance: Conduct inspections, identify faults, and carry out routine checks before operating equipment.

  • Safe Operating Procedures: Operate a forklift safely and efficiently while minimising risks to yourself and others.

  • Load Handling & Stability: Lift, carry, and place loads safely while understanding load balance and stability principles.

  • Control Measures & Safety Planning: Apply risk control measures and plan tasks to ensure safe forklift operations.

  • Communication & Reporting: Communicate effectively in the workplace and report hazards, incidents, and equipment issues.

  • Shutdown & Securing Equipment:
    Safely park, shut down, and secure the forklift after use.

By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in your ability to identify hazards, operate a forklift safely, and maintain a safe and productive work environment.

* Please Note: This course provides nationally recognised training in forklift operation for workplace and site-based environments (such as mining and construction), but it does not result in a High Risk Work Licence. Completing this unit alone does not permit you to legally operate a forklift where a licence is required. If you need a forklift licence, we also offer the Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck course.

Course Delivery and Assessment

In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.

Step 1 - Complete online theory (within 30 days) 

The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short exercises) to ensure understanding.

Step 2 - Attend 1 day face-to-face training (appx 4-6 hours)

Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.

You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.

  • Warehousing, transport and logistics staff: Anyone required to operate forklifts for loading, unloading, stacking, and moving goods safely.

  • Mining and resources personnel: Roles that involve yard operations, warehousing, and logistics support in resource environments.

This certification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and can support applications for higher roles in safety and compliance.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however students will need:

  • Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and online modules)

  • Adequate language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments, and;

  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
