Five local trainees have secured employment after completing a successful training and work placement program in Doomadgee, demonstrating the life-changing impact of practical, community-based training.
Civil Safety was proud to deliver the Certificate I in Construction on behalf of Community Owned Enterprises (COE) as part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) initiative. Working in partnership with COE and the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council, the six-month program combined nationally recognised training with paid, practical work experience, creating real pathways into employment for local participants.
Training was delivered by Civil Safety trainer Brendon "Mingy" Beasley, a Normanton local whose strong understanding of the region and its communities helped create a supportive learning environment for participants.

Building Skills That Lead to Employment
The Pathways to Trade Skills program gave participants the opportunity to develop practical construction skills while working on real council projects throughout Doomadgee. The combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience helped trainees build confidence, gain valuable workplace skills, and prepare for long-term employment.
The program produced outstanding results, with five participants moving directly into employment or further career opportunities.
Four graduates - Lachlan Dick, Clay Watt, Trevor Moreland and Boyd Caulton - secured full-time employment with the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council after impressing supervisors throughout the project. Boyd has also commenced additional training towards a Certificate III in Water Treatment Operations, preparing him to support the community's new water treatment facilities.
Another participant, Athol Walden, secured full-time employment with Durack Civil before completing the program, while the remaining trainees earned their White Cards and valuable work experience that strengthened their employment prospects.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
For participant Trevor Moreland, the program marked a significant personal achievement - his first-ever employment opportunity.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at the Ngooderi Hub, Trevor shared his excitement about what the future holds.
"I'm so proud of what we have accomplished and I'm excited about what being in my new job will do for my future."
