Course Delivery and Assessment

The Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance) is a flexible, blended delivery course designed to fit around your work and lifestyle, giving you up to 12 months to complete your studies at your own pace. The theory component of the course is delivered online, while face-to-face training sessions focus on developing the hands-on, practical skills needed on real civil construction sites. Our trainers will demonstrate key techniques of plant and machinery operation and provide personalised feedback and guidance, helping you build both confidence and competence.

Assessment is competency-based, meaning you’ll be evaluated on your ability to perform tasks and apply knowledge in real-world civil construction settings. This includes:

  • Road Construction Worker - building, repairing, and maintaining roads, highways, and pavements using hand and power tools and machinery

  • Road Maintenance Labourer - performing routine maintenance, resurfacing, and repair works on existing road networks

  • Civil Construction Worker - assisting with drainage, kerbing, concreting, and other general civil works on infrastructure projects

  • Plant Operator (Roadworks) - operating machinery such as rollers, graders, and compactors used in road construction and maintenance activities

  • Asphalt or Bitumen Crew Member - preparing surfaces, laying and compacting asphalt, and ensuring quality and safety standards are met during surfacing operations

  • Traffic Management or Site Support Worker - implementing traffic control measures and providing on-site support for roadwork and infrastructure projects

There are no formal entry requirements to enrol in this course; however, students should have:

  • basic computer skills and access to the internet

  • sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments, and;

  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
