The Conduct Hydraulic Excavator Operations (RIIMPO301E) course provides the practical knowledge and skills required to operate hydraulic excavators safely and effectively across a range of work environments.
You’ll learn about:
Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS legislation, workplace procedures, and your responsibilities as a hydraulic excavator operator.
Hazard Identification: Identify workplace hazards, underground services, ground conditions, and environmental factors that may affect excavator operations.
Excavator Equipment: Learn about hydraulic excavators, their controls, attachments, capabilities, and safe applications.
Pre-Operational Checks & Maintenance: Conduct pre-start inspections, identify equipment faults, and perform basic maintenance checks before and after operation.
Safe Operating Procedures: Operate a hydraulic excavator safely and efficiently to excavate, load, move, and place materials.
Load Handling & Stability: Apply safe operating techniques, maintain machine stability, and manage loads within the excavator’s operating limits.
Risk Management & Safety Planning: Apply risk controls, follow site procedures, and plan excavation activities to minimise risks.
Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to equipment malfunctions, unstable ground, service strikes, and other workplace emergencies.
Communication & Reporting: Follow workplace communication procedures and report hazards, incidents, equipment faults, and maintenance requirements.
By the end of the course, you’ll have developed the skills and knowledge to operate a hydraulic excavator safely, perform excavation and material-handling tasks, use attachments appropriately, and follow safe work practices.
Course Delivery and Assessment
In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.
Step 1 - Complete Online Module (within 30 days)
The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short exercises) to ensure understanding.
Step 2 - Attend 1 Day of Face-to-Face Training
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.
You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.

Construction and trades workers - Anyone required to operate hydraulic excavators on building, road, civil construction, or infrastructure projects.
Civil construction workers - Workers involved in earthmoving, trenching, excavation, backfilling, and site preparation.
Landscaping and earthmoving crews - Workers using excavators for digging, ground preparation, shaping, and moving materials.
Mining and resources personnel - Operators working with hydraulic excavators for excavation, material handling, and site development.

There are no formal entry requirements; however, students will need:
To be at least 16 years of age
Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.
