Operate Elevating Work Platform (EWP) - Course Information

The Operate Elevating Work Platform (EWP) course provides you with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience to safely operate elevated work platforms in the workplace. You’ll learn about:

  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS, workplace requirements, and legal obligations for operating EWPs.

  • Hazard Identification: Recognise workplace hazards, overhead risks, and other operational dangers.

  • EWP Equipment: Learn about different types of elevated work platforms and their safe use.

  • Pre-Use Checks & Maintenance: Inspect, maintain, and carry out safety checks on EWP equipment before use.

  • Safe Operating Procedures: Operate EWPs efficiently while minimising risks to yourself and others.

  • Load Handling & Positioning: Safely lift, position, and work with loads at height.

  • Control Measures & Safety Planning: Implement risk control measures and plan tasks safely.

  • Emergency Response: Respond effectively to incidents or equipment malfunctions while working at height.

  • Communication & Reporting: Report hazards, incidents, and equipment issues in line with workplace procedures.

By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in your ability to identify potential hazards, operate elevated work platforms safely, and maintain a secure work environment at height.

Course delivery and assessment

In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.

Step 1 - Complete theory module online (within 30 days) 
The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short scenario-based exercises) to ensure understanding.

Step 2 - Attend 1 day face-to-face training (appx 4-6 hours)
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.

You need to pass both steps to complete the course.

This course is ideal for people working in the following industries:

  • Construction, trades and equipment hire workers: Anyone required to operate scissor lifts, boom lifts, or other elevating work platforms on worksites.

  • Warehouse, transport, and logistics staff: Workers who use EWP equipment for loading, unloading, or accessing high areas.

  • Maintenance and installation teams: Electricians, painters, cleaners, and technicians who perform tasks at height.

  • Mining and resources personnel: Where EWPs are commonly used to access elevated work areas safely.

  • Event and facilities staff: People involved in setting up staging, lighting, or equipment in elevated positions.

Completing the Operate Elevating Work Platform (EWP) course prepares you for a variety of roles across multiple industries such as:

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, students will need:

  • Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)

  • Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments

  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.

  • Please note: this unit alone does not provide sufficient skills to independently load and unload equipment. To perform this safely, you must also complete (or be assisted by someone who has completed) RIIHAN308F Load and Unload Plant, or an equivalent qualification.
