This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to safely enter and work in confined spaces. You'll learn how to:
Understand confined space WHS legislation and compliance requirements
Identify hazards and apply effective risk control measures
Complete confined space entry permits correctly
Apply isolation and lock-out procedures
Select and use PPE and safety equipment
Follow safe entry and exit procedures
Restore and secure the work area after completion
This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to test and monitor atmospheric conditions in hazardous work areas. You’ll learn how to:
Identify hazardous gases and oxygen-deficient environments
Operate and calibrate gas detection equipment
Conduct atmospheric testing in confined and high-risk environments
Interpret readings and determine safe working conditions
Implement control measures where hazards are identified
Record and report gas test results correctly
Respond appropriately to hazardous atmosphere incidents
This unit provides the skills required to issue, monitor and manage work permits for high-risk tasks. You’ll learn how to:
Interpret workplace procedures and permit systems
Identify hazards related to high-risk work (hot work, confined space, isolation, electrical, excavation, etc.)
Ensure appropriate risk assessments and control measures are in place
Authorise work through correct permit documentation
Coordinate with supervisors, contractors and workers
Monitor work conditions and maintain compliance
Suspend or cancel permits when conditions change
Close out permits correctly and maintain records
In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.
The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short exercises) to ensure understanding.
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.
You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.

Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.

Eligible workers, employers and career seekers in Queensland’s building and construction industry can save up to 75-100% on courses, including short courses, units of competency, or Certificate and Diploma qualifications.
