The Licence to Perform Basic and Intermediate Rigging combined course provides you with the skills and knowledge required to safely carry out basic and intermediate rigging operations across construction, industrial and civil worksites. You’ll develop practical, hands-on experience in load movement, rigging techniques and signalling while building a strong understanding of workplace hazards and control measures.
You’ll learn about:
Load Control & Rigging Techniques: Safely select, attach, move and release loads using a range of slings, chains, lifting beams, spreader bars and both basic and intermediate rigging equipment.
Rigging Set-Ups: Perform basic and intermediate rigging tasks including the erection, movement, positioning and dismantling of plant, structures and equipment under supervision.
Signalling & Communication: Communicate effectively with crane operators and team members using approved hand signals, radios and standard workplace communication methods.
Legislation & Compliance: Apply relevant WHS legislation, codes of practice and workplace procedures for basic and intermediate rigging operations.
Hazard Identification & Control: Identify, assess and manage hazards associated with lifting operations, suspended loads and rigging activities at both basic and intermediate levels.
Risk Assessment & Lift Planning: Plan lifting and rigging activities, including load calculations, equipment selection and implementation of appropriate control measures.
Equipment Inspection & Care: Inspect, maintain and correctly store rigging gear, lifting devices and associated equipment to ensure safe operation.
Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to incidents such as dropped loads, equipment failure or unexpected load movement.
Workplace Reporting: Accurately report hazards, incidents and equipment defects in line with workplace and site requirements.
By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in performing both basic and intermediate rigging operations, managing loads safely, handling equipment correctly and applying safe work practices in full compliance with workplace regulations.
Due to the high-risk nature of rigging work, the Licence to Perform Basic and Intermediate Rigging course is delivered face-to-face over 10 days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed.
