Course Overview

The Licence to Operate a Non-Slewing Mobile Crane (CN) course takes you beyond theory, providing hands-on training in all aspects of non-slewing mobile crane operations. You’ll learn to safely plan lifts, inspect equipment, coordinate with team members, and manage loads under real-world conditions. Emphasis is placed on practical decision-making, hazard control, and workplace compliance, ensuring you can operate confidently and efficiently on site.

By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to perform crane operations independently, apply safe lifting practices, and meet all legislative and workplace requirements. You’ll learn about:

  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, licensing obligations, and workplace safety standards for crane operations.
  • Crane Operation: Safely operate non-slewing mobile cranes, control loads, and manage hazards. Non-slewing mobile cranes include articulated mobile cranes and locomotive cranes, but do not include vehicle tow trucks.
  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, licensing obligations, and workplace safety standards for crane operations.
  • Pre-Operational Checks: Inspect cranes, lifting gear, and site conditions to ensure everything is ready for safe operations.
  • Load Planning & Calculation: Estimate load weights, select appropriate lifting gear, and plan lifts in accordance with safe work procedures.
  • Load Movement: Precisely manoeuvre loads using correct lifting techniques and clear communication signals.
  • Post-Operational Procedures: Secure, shut down, and inspect the crane after use to maintain safety and equipment integrity.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Coordinate effectively with doggers, riggers, and site personnel to ensure safe lifting operations.
  • Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to unexpected incidents, such as equipment faults or load instability.

By the end of the course, you’ll be confident operating non-slewing cranes safely, managing risks, and ensuring compliance with workplace and industry standards.
