The Secure Cargo & Load and Unload Goods/Cargo course provides the skills and knowledge required to safely secure, load and unload goods and cargo in the workplace. This training is suitable for workers involved in transport, logistics, warehousing, construction, civil and resources operations.
Through a combination of practical, hands-on training and theory, you’ll learn how to safely prepare cargo for transport, select and use appropriate load restraint equipment, secure loads, and safely load and unload goods and cargo.
You’ll also learn how to identify potential hazards and apply safe work practices to help prevent injury, damage to goods and equipment, and load movement during transport.
You’ll complete the following two units:

The Secure Cargo & Load and Unload Goods/Cargo course provides the skills and knowledge required to safely secure, load and unload goods and cargo in the workplace. The course covers safe load restraint practices, the selection and use of appropriate equipment, and procedures for loading and unloading cargo while minimising risks to workers, property and the public.
Through practical, hands-on training and theory, you’ll develop the skills required to prepare cargo for transport, apply appropriate load restraint methods, safely load and unload goods, and identify and manage hazards associated with these activities.
You’ll learn about:
Cargo Preparation: Identify cargo characteristics, assess load requirements and prepare goods for safe transport.
Load Restraint: Select and apply appropriate load restraint methods and equipment to prevent cargo from shifting, moving or falling during transport.
Restraint Equipment: Identify, inspect and correctly use load restraint equipment, including straps, chains and other appropriate securing devices.
Loading Procedures: Safely position and load goods and cargo using appropriate methods, equipment and workplace procedures.
Unloading Procedures: Safely unload and remove goods and cargo while maintaining control of the load and managing potential hazards.
Load Distribution and Stability: Understand the importance of appropriate load distribution, positioning and stability to maintain a safe load.
Hazard Identification and Risk Control: Identify and control hazards associated with securing, loading and unloading goods and cargo.
Safe Manual Handling: Apply safe manual handling techniques when handling, moving, loading and unloading goods and cargo.
Equipment Safety: Safely operate and use relevant loading, unloading and load restraint equipment in accordance with workplace requirements.
Load Inspection: Inspect cargo and load restraint systems to identify damage, defects, movement or other unsafe conditions.
Workplace Procedures: Follow workplace procedures, safety requirements and manufacturer instructions when securing, loading and unloading cargo.
Legislation and Compliance: Apply relevant workplace health and safety requirements and load restraint principles to cargo handling activities.
Communication and Reporting: Communicate effectively with other workers and report hazards, damaged equipment, incidents and unsafe loads as required.

Course Delivery and Assessment
The Secure Cargo & Load and Unload Goods/Cargo course is delivered face-to-face over one day, combining practical training with theory to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to safely secure, load and unload goods and cargo. Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to understand course materials, participate in training and complete the required assessments.
Have basic computer skills and internet access for enrolment, course communication and any online learning or assessment activities, where applicable.
Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't have a USI, you can apply through USI or we can assist you.
