The Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane (RIIHAN305D) course provides practical, hands-on training for individuals required to operate gantry or overhead cranes safely and competently in workplace environments. This nationally recognised unit focuses on developing practical skills and confidence to perform crane operations safely and effectively.
Participants will learn how to conduct pre-start checks, identify and assess lifting hazards, safely operate gantry or overhead cranes, apply safe work procedures, and carry out lifting operations in accordance with workplace requirements and Australian standards. This course is suitable for workers entering the industry, upskilling existing personnel, or those requiring formal competency to operate gantry or overhead cranes in the workplace.

The Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane (RIIHAN305D) course provides participants with the practical knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely operate gantry or overhead cranes across construction, mining, manufacturing, industrial, and other workplace environments.
You’ll learn about:
Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS responsibilities, site procedures, and legal requirements relating to gantry and overhead crane operations and lifting activities.
Lift Planning & Preparation: Learn how to plan lifting tasks, interpret work instructions, assess lifting requirements, and prepare work areas safely and efficiently.
Hazard Identification & Risk Control: Identify hazards associated with crane operations, suspended loads, ground conditions, overhead obstructions, and nearby personnel, while applying appropriate risk controls.
Crane Components & Equipment: Gain an understanding of gantry and overhead crane components, controls, lifting equipment, attachments, and their correct applications and limitations.
Pre-Operational Inspections: Conduct pre-start checks, inspect crane systems and lifting equipment, and identify faults or defects before commencing operations.
Safe Crane Operations: Operate gantry or overhead cranes safely and effectively while lifting, moving, positioning, and placing loads in accordance with workplace procedures.
Load Handling & Load Control: Apply safe lifting techniques, maintain load stability, and control loads throughout crane operations.
Communication & Signalling: Use standard communication methods, hand signals, and radio procedures where required to coordinate lifting activities with other site personnel.
Emergency Procedures & Incident Response: Respond appropriately to equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or emergency situations during lifting operations.
Documentation & Reporting: Complete workplace documentation, report hazards or incidents, and maintain records in line with organisational and site requirements.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the practical skills and knowledge to safely operate gantry or overhead cranes, carry out lifting operations, and support safe and compliant workplace practices.

Course Delivery and Assessment
This course is delivered through a blend of theoretical learning and 1-3 days of practical, hands-on training to ensure you develop the skills and confidence required to safely operate a gantry or overhead crane in real workplace environments.
Training is conducted by experienced industry trainers who guide you through safe operating procedures, hazard identification, lift planning, equipment checks, load handling, and communication techniques used on site. You’ll complete practical exercises using industry-relevant equipment, allowing you to apply your learning in realistic lifting scenarios.
Assessment is competency-based and designed to confirm your ability to operate a gantry or overhead crane safely and in line with current industry standards and workplace requirements. You will be assessed through a combination of written knowledge questions, verbal questioning, and practical demonstration of skills.
High Risk Work Licences
Please note: This unit does not provide a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). It does not authorise you to legally operate a gantry or overhead crane in situations where a HRWL or other licence is required under WHS legislation.
If you require a High Risk Work Licence to operate a crane, you should check the specific licensing requirements for the crane type and work being undertaken.
