The Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform course provides you with the practical knowledge and hands-on experience required to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform in the workplace. You’ll learn about:

  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, workplace procedures, and legal obligations relevant to operating boom-type EWPs.

  • Hazard Identification: Identify workplace hazards, overhead obstructions, ground conditions, powerline risks, and other operational dangers.

  • Equipment & Controls: Understand the components, controls, functions, and safe operating requirements of boom-type elevating work platforms.

  • Pre-Operational Checks: Conduct pre-start inspections, identify defects, and ensure the EWP is safe and ready for operation.

  • Set-Up & Positioning: Safely position and set up the EWP for the task, considering ground conditions, access, overhead hazards, and exclusion zones.

  • Safe Operating Procedures: Operate the boom-type EWP safely and efficiently while maintaining control of the equipment and minimising risks to yourself and others.

  • Working at Height: Apply safe work practices when operating at height, including maintaining appropriate clearances and following workplace procedures.

  • Risk Management & Control Measures: Identify risks and implement appropriate control measures before and during EWP operations.

  • Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to emergencies, equipment malfunctions, and other unexpected situations.

  • Communication & Reporting: Communicate effectively with workers and spotters and report hazards, defects, incidents, and equipment issues in accordance with workplace procedures.

Course Delivery and Assessment

Due to the practical and safety-critical nature of operating a boom-type elevating work platform, the Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform (TLID3035) course is delivered face-to-face with hands-on practical training and assessment.

You’ll gain experience operating a boom-type EWP in a controlled environment, developing the skills to safely inspect, set up and operate the equipment while identifying hazards and applying appropriate control measures. Experienced trainers provide direct guidance and personalised feedback throughout the course to help you build confidence and competence.

  • Mining & Resources: Workers who use boom-type EWPs to safely access elevated work areas and carry out maintenance, construction, or operational tasks.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:

  • TLID3035 - Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform

This unit is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and provides the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform in the workplace.

Please note: TLID3035 does not provide a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). If you are required to operate a boom-type EWP with a boom length of 11 metres or more, you will need to obtain the relevant High Risk Work Licence (WP class) by completing the required licensing training and assessment.

  • Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and online modules)

  • Adequate language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments, and;

  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
