Introduction
The
Licence to Erect, Alter and Dismantle Scaffolding (Intermediate) course gives you the practical skills and confidence to safely work with scaffolding at an intermediate level. You’ll get hands-on experience erecting, altering, and dismantling scaffolds, while learning correct procedures, hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work practices - all in realistic, workplace-focused scenarios.
This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for anyone in construction, maintenance, or civil industries who wants to build on basic scaffolding skills. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in intermediate scaffolding operations, understand workplace safety requirements, and be ready to work safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulations.

Course Overview
The Licence to Erect, Alter and Dismantle Scaffolding (Intermediate) course provides advanced knowledge and hands-on experience to safely erect, alter, and dismantle scaffolding systems beyond the basic level. You’ll develop practical skills and learn to manage risks effectively while working with a variety of scaffold types and associated equipment. You’ll learn about:
- Equipment & Scaffold Types: Work safely with cantilevered crane-loading platforms, cantilevered scaffolds, spur scaffolds, barrow ramps and sloping platforms, scaffolding associated with perimeter safety screens and shutters, mast climbing work platforms, and tube and coupler scaffolds (including tube and coupler covered ways and gantries).
- Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS and workplace requirements for scaffold work.
- Hazard Identification: Recognise hazards when erecting, altering, or dismantling scaffolds.
- Risk Assessment & Planning: Plan scaffold operations and implement control measures before work begins.
- Scaffold Erection & Dismantling: Safely erect, alter, and dismantle scaffolds in line with industry standards, including intermediate-height scaffolds.
- Load Handling & Stability: Ensure scaffold stability and safely manage materials on scaffold structures.
- Inspection & Maintenance: Conduct routine checks and identify defective components.
- Emergency Procedures & Rescue: Respond effectively to incidents, including scaffold failures or falls.
- Communication & Reporting: Report hazards, incidents, and maintenance issues according to workplace procedures.
By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in safely working on intermediate scaffolding systems, handling equipment correctly, and managing risks in full compliance with workplace safety standards.
Delivery & Assessment
Due to the high-risk nature of scaffolding work, the Licence to Erect, Alter and Dismantle Scaffolding (Intermediate) course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
High Risk Work Licences
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. If you prefer, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $100.

Entry Requirements
You must satisfy each of the following criteria to enrol in this course:
- You must be at least 18 years old (a requirement for High Risk Work Licences)
- Wear steel-capped or safety boots to your session and PPE.
- Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication).
- Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments.
- A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.
Funding is Available For this Course
Construction Training Fund (CTF - WA)
Eligible apprentices, trainees, workers and business owners in WA’s building and construction industry can save up to 70% per course (metro) and 80% per course (regional) with CTF funding. As an approved bulk billing provider, we handle the paperwork and claim process for you - so you only pay the gap while you upskill, get licences, and complete safety courses.
