By the end of the course, you’ll be able to safely signal and move loads, understand workplace safety requirements, and carry out dogging tasks efficiently and in full compliance with regulations.

Course Overview

The Licence to Perform Dogging course provides essential knowledge and hands-on experience to safely control loads and communicate effectively with crane operators. You’ll develop practical skills in load movement, rigging, and signalling while understanding workplace hazards and control measures. You’ll learn about:
  • Load Control & Rigging: Safely attach, move, and release loads using various slings, chains, and lifting devices.
  • Signalling: Communicate clearly with crane operators using hand signals, radio, and other signalling methods.
  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS and workplace requirements for dogging operations.
  • Hazard Identification: Recognise and control hazards when lifting, moving, or positioning loads.
  • Risk Assessment & Planning: Plan lifting operations and implement safety measures before work begins.
  • Equipment Inspection & Maintenance: Check rigging gear, cranes, and lifting equipment for defects.
  • Emergency Procedures & Rescue: Respond effectively to load incidents, dropped loads, or equipment failures.
  • Communication & Reporting: Report hazards, incidents, and maintenance issues according to workplace procedures.
By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in safely performing dogging operations, managing loads correctly, and working in full compliance with workplace safety standards.
Delivery & Assessment

Due to the high-risk nature of dogging work, the Licence to Perform Dogging course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.

High Risk Work Licences

After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.

You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. If you prefer, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $100.

Entry Requirements

You must satisfy each of the following criteria to enrol in this course:
  • You must be at least 18 years old (a requirement for High Risk Work Licences)
  • Wear steel-capped or safety boots to your session and PPE
  • Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
  • Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist


Funding is Available For this Course

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ)
Eligible workers, employers and career seekers in Queensland’s building and construction industry can save up to 75-100% on courses, including short courses, units of competency, or Certificate and Diploma qualifications. While CSQ provides substantial funding, a student co-contribution fee is typically required. Check your eligiblity or contact us for more information.

Construction Training Fund (CTF - WA) 
Eligible apprentices, trainees, workers and business owners in WA’s building and construction industry can save up to 70% per course (metro) and 80% per course (regional) with CTF funding. As an approved bulk billing provider, we handle the paperwork and claim process for you - so you only pay the gap while you upskill, get licences, and complete safety courses.
