Introduction

The Licence to Perform Rigging (Basic) course provides you with the essential skills and knowledge to safely perform basic rigging operations on construction, industrial, and civil works sites. Through hands-on training, you’ll learn to plan lifts, select and inspect rigging gear, attach and move loads, and communicate effectively with crane operators and site personnel.

This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for anyone in construction, maintenance, or resources industries who wants to develop a solid foundation in rigging practices. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in performing basic rigging tasks safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with workplace regulations.

Course Overview

The Licence to Perform Rigging (Basic) course provides foundational knowledge and hands-on experience to safely perform basic rigging operations. You’ll develop practical skills and learn to manage risks effectively while working with a variety of basic rigging gear and lifting equipment. You’ll learn about:

  • Rigging Equipment & Gear: Safely select, inspect, and use slings, shackles, chains, hooks, and other basic rigging equipment.
  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS requirements, licensing obligations, and workplace safety standards for basic rigging operations.
  • Hazard Identification: Recognise and control hazards when attaching, lifting, or moving loads.
  • Risk Assessment & Planning: Plan basic lifts and implement control measures before work begins.
  • Load Attachment & Movement: Safely attach, move, and release loads using correct lifting techniques and communication signals.
  • Inspection & Maintenance: Conduct routine checks on rigging gear and identify defective components.
  • Emergency Procedures: Respond effectively to unexpected incidents, such as load instability or equipment faults.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Work effectively with doggers, crane operators, and site personnel to ensure safe lifting operations.

By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in performing basic rigging tasks, handling equipment correctly, and applying safe work practices in compliance with workplace regulations.


Delivery & Assessment

Due to the high-risk nature of rigging work, the Licence to Perform Rigging (Basic) course is delivered face-to-face over four full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.

High Risk Work Licences

After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.

You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. If you prefer, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $100.

Entry Requirements

You must satisfy each of the following criteria to enrol in this course:

  • You must be at least 18 years old (a requirement for High Risk Work Licences).
  • Wear steel-capped or safety boots to your session and PPE.
  • Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication).
  • Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments.
  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.

 


Funding is Available For this Course

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ)
Eligible workers, employers and career seekers in Queensland’s building and construction industry can save up to 75-100% on courses, including short courses, units of competency, or Certificate and Diploma qualifications. While CSQ provides substantial funding, a student co-contribution fee is typically required. Check your eligiblity or contact us for more information.

Construction Training Fund (CTF - WA)
Eligible apprentices, trainees, workers and business owners in WA’s building and construction industry can save up to 70% per course (metro) and 80% per course (regional) with CTF funding. As an approved bulk billing provider, we handle the paperwork and claim process for you - so you only pay the gap while you upskill, get licences, and complete safety courses.
