Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6 up to 60 tonne capacity) - Course Information

Course Overview

The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6) course builds on foundational crane skills and prepares you to operate larger, more complex slewing cranes up to 60 tonnes. This hands-on program teaches you advanced load handling, boom control, lift planning, and risk management required for medium-capacity crane operations.

By completing this course, you’ll be equipped to take on more demanding lifting roles across construction, mining, maintenance, and industrial environments. You’ll learn about:
  • Legislation & Compliance: Advanced WHS obligations, HRWL requirements, and industry standards for medium-capacity slewing cranes.
  • Crane Setup & Configuration: Selecting setup locations, deploying outriggers, configuring crane modes, and interpreting site conditions.
  • Detailed Pre-Operational Checks: Assessing boom systems, counterweights, slew bearings, rigging gear, and crane integrity.
  • Load Chart Analysis: Working with multi-configuration load charts, operating envelopes, and complex lift parameters.
  • Crane Operation: Operating slewing cranes safely - precision boom extension, slew coordination, hoisting, and safe load placement.
  • Complex Load Movement: Performing multi-directional lifts, dual-crane communication, and managing dynamic loads.
  • Post-Operational Procedures: Completing shutdown procedures, load gear inspections, and securing the crane for transport or storage.
  • Communication & Team Coordination: Working closely with riggers, doggers, supervisors, and spotters during complex lifting tasks.
  • Emergency Response: Managing failures, environmental risks, and unexpected load behaviours during operational tasks.
By the end of the course, you’ll be prepared to operate a 60-tonne slewing mobile crane safely and confidently while meeting all legislative and workplace safety requirements.

Delivery & Assessment

Due to the high-risk nature of crane operation, the Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6) course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.

High Risk Work Licences

After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.

You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. If you prefer, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $100.
