What is confined spaces training?
The Enter and Work in Confined Spaces (RIIWHS202E) course is the nationally recognised unit that qualifies you to work safely in tanks, pipes, bunds, shafts, and other enclosed spaces. You’ll learn to identify hazards, monitor atmospheric conditions, follow entry procedures, communicate with a standby person, and how to respond if something goes wrong.
Construction crews, civil contractors, mine workers, and utilities personnel all need this qualification before they’re cleared to enter a confined space on site. Time is precious when you’re in a confined space, so there’s no time to hesitate on what to do next. That’s what this training is for.
Does confined spaces training expire?
No, not under the Australian VET system. Your Statement of Attainment for this course stays on your training record permanently and doesn’t have an automatic expiry date.
However, you might lose access to work sites after a certain point. Australian Standard AS 2865-2009 requires workers to be reassessed at appropriate intervals without specifying a number, but the industry has settled on two years as the standard interval. Most mine sites, construction projects, and asset owners treat a two-year refresher cycle as the baseline expectation.
Before you book, check the date on your latest Statement of Attainment. If it was issued within the last five years for RIIWHS202E, RIIWHS202D, or the superseded MSMPER205, then you qualify for the streamlined refresher. If it’s been longer than five years, then you’ll need to complete the full course again.
Online vs face-to-face: choosing your refresher pathway
You can complete your confined spaces refresher either online or in person. Here’s how the two options compare:
Online: You complete this pathway through the student portal at your own pace, but you do need to finish within 30 days of enrolment. Most people get through it in just a few hours, especially those who’ve been working in confined spaces recently and just need an updated refresher to meet their employer’s requirements.
Face-to-face: You attend a short session at one of our training facilities in Queensland and Western Australia. There, you work through interactive quizzes and scenario-based questions, and then complete a final assessment where your trainer confirms you can apply the skills correctly.

Assessing the atmosphere: Operating and calibrating gas detectors correctly matters here, since misreading oxygen levels or contaminants is one of the most common causes of confined space incidents.
Checking safety systems: You must check every harness and all ventilation equipment every time you work in a confined space.
Following observer protocols: You’ll re-establish communication rules and practise emergency standby handovers, covering what happens if something goes wrong while you’re inside.

And if one’s up for renewal, then the rest probably are as well. Most shutdowns, maintenance contracts, and resource projects require all three to be current before you get to start working.
