You’ll likely need to refresh your working at heights and confined space tickets at the same time if you completed the training together. If your gas test ticket is on the same timeline, then you might have three refreshers to sort out at once.
At Civil Safety (RTO 32381), we bundle Work Safely at Heights (RIIWHS204) with Enter and Work in Confined Spaces (RIIWHS202E) and Gas Test Atmospheres (MSMWHS217) so you can refresh them all at once. This guide explains what gas testing covers, when to refresh it, and what your five bundle options are.
What is Gas Test Atmospheres training?
Gas Test Atmospheres (MSMWHS217) is the nationally recognised unit that qualifies you to test whether the air in and around a confined space is safe to breathe and work in. This is important because enclosed spaces can trap harmful gases your senses won’t pick up. Carbon monoxide has no colour or smell at all. Hydrogen sulphide is even trickier, as it smells like rotten eggs at low levels but can knock out your sense of smell at higher concentrations. That’s why a trained gas tester needs to check the air before anyone works in an enclosed space.
You’ll learn four core skills in Gas Test Atmospheres training:
What to test for: The biggest concerns are too little or too much oxygen, along with flammable and toxic gasses that accumulate in enclosed areas.
How to check your equipment: You’ll inspect your gas detector before each use and confirm it’s working properly.
How to read the results: With practice, you’ll be able to interpret detector readings accurately and identify dangerous levels.
What to do if the levels are unsafe: You’ll learn the right response when a reading falls outside safe limits.
When should you refresh Gas Test Atmospheres training?
Gas Test Atmospheres has no formal expiry date or regulator-mandated refresher interval. However, industry practice generally recommends refreshing your training every two years. Requirements can vary between employers and worksites, so check with your employer to confirm when you need to refresh your training and avoid your ticket being considered out of date.
You can refresh your gas test ticket on its own through the online Gas Test Atmospheres refresher. You’ll need the Statement of Attainment from your original course when you enrol. The course costs $180 and usually takes 2 to 4 hours to complete. You have 30 days from enrolment to finish, so you can work through it between shifts.
A bundle may suit you better if your heights and confined space tickets are due at the same time.
Why refresh all three together
A single confined space job can require three separate tickets. Take an inspection inside a water tank as an example:
You test the air at the opening with your Gas Test Atmospheres (MSMWHS217) training before you go in. Depending on the pre-entry risk assessment, continuous air monitoring is required
You then climb down the ladder using the fall protection skills from Work Safely at Heights (RIIWHS204).
You carry out the inspection using the safe work procedures from Enter and Work in Confined Spaces (RIIWHS202E).
You keep monitoring the air with your gas detector until you’re back out of the tank.
You can refresh all three in one bundle if your working at heights refresher training and confined spaces refresher training come due around the same time as your gas test. Our online 3-course bundle covers every unit under one enrolment with a single 30-day window to finish them all. Our face-to-face bundle covers all three in one day. We run it at our Mackay training facility or on-site at your workplace.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Our online 3-course bundle covers all three units at once for $540. You can also book our face-to-face 3-course bundle for $600 if you’d rather finish everything in person.
The online 3-course bundle usually takes 2 to 4 hours depending on your prior knowledge and experience. You have 30 days from enrolment to finish it at your own pace. The face-to-face bundle takes one day at our Mackay training facility or at your workplace.
That depends on the work and the site. Gas Test Atmospheres (MSMWHS217) and Enter and Work in Confined Spaces (RIIWHS202E) are separate units with their own assessments. Your confined space ticket covers safe entry and work inside the space, but it doesn’t qualify you to test the air. Your employer or on site operator decides whether your role needs both.
You’ll need a Statement of Attainment from an RTO for every unit the bundle covers. We don’t accept wallet cards unless they meet AQF requirements. You’ll also need a photo ID and a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) when you enrol.
